You've Published A Book. Now what?

Publishing your book feels like reaching the summit after a long climb. You’ve poured your heart into writing, editing, and designing your cozy mystery, and now it’s out in the wild. But the journey doesn’t end here. If you want readers to find your book, you need to start marketing and promoting it. The transition from being a writer to a promoter can be awkward, but you owe it to yourself to give your work the attention it deserves after all the effort you invested.

As a selfpublished cozy mystery author, I’ve learned that book marketing is just as important as writing. Without it, your book might sit quietly on digital shelves or in print, waiting for readers who may never come. Here’s how I started promoting the Claire O' Keefe mysteries and some practical tips to help you do the same.

Start with your existing network

Your first readers are often people you already know. Tell friends, family, and colleagues about your book. Share your excitement and ask them to spread the word. I sent personalized emails to my contacts, explaining what my book was about and why I was proud of it. Many of them bought a copy or recommended it to others.

Don’t underestimate the power of word-of-mouth. When people you know talk about your book, it builds trust and curiosity among their circles.

Build an online presence that fits you

You don’t need to be everywhere online, but having a simple website or blog is essential. I created a site where readers can learn about my books, read excerpts, and find links to buy. I also maintain a newsletter to keep fans updated on new releases and promotions.

Choose social media platforms where your target readers hang out. For cozy mysteries, Facebook groups and Instagram work well. Share behind-the-scenes stories, snippets from your book, or even photos of your writing space. This helps readers connect with you as a person, not just an author.

Use targeted book marketing strategies

Book marketing can feel overwhelming, but focusing on a few key tactics makes it manageable:

  • Book giveaways: I ran giveaways on social media and through my newsletter. This created buzz and brought new readers.

  • Book reviews: Reach out to bloggers and reviewers who specialize in cozy mysteries. Honest reviews boost your book’s credibility.

  • Book clubs: Offer your book to local or online book clubs. I joined a few mystery book clubs and participated in discussions, which helped spread the word.

Each of these methods helped me reach readers who were genuinely interested in my genre.

Keep promoting after launch week

Many writers focus all their energy on launch week, then slow down. I found that consistent promotion over months keeps sales steady. Schedule regular posts, update your website, and stay active in reader communities.

For example, I write blog posts about my writing process or share recipes inspired by my cozy mysteries. These keep readers engaged and remind them about my books.

Publishing your book is a huge achievement, but marketing it is what brings it to life. You owe it to yourself and your readers to take the next step. Start small, use your network, build your online presence, and try targeted book promotion strategies. Keep learning and adapting as you go.
